Black Basalt

Black Basalt was originally developed and produced by Josiah Wedgwood in 1768. Wedgwood's inspiration to create the superior black stoneware derived from the Etruscan vase forms that were being excavated in Italy during that time. In order to duplicate these ancient wares, reddish-brown clay mixed with manganese was used, which burned black during firing and created a smooth, luxurious surface. This could then be painted and decorated by means of encaustic enamel using a brush and various colours such as white, pink, green, orange and blue. The ornamental and practical wares were tremendously popular and are still greatly valued to this day.
