Ball and Claw

The Ball and Claw motif is the design carved into furniture feet that resembles a dragon's claw, or eagle's talon, clutching a ball. It is believed to have originated from ancient China and Egypt; though was only introduced to and became popular in England and America during the 1700s. There is a vast array of Ball and Claw furnishings, ranging from chairs and stools to tables, desks and cabinets. These are most often designed on a cabriole leg. As is with most antiques, the condition, age and quality of Ball and Claw furniture, is what determines its value.
