The earliest furnishings were made primarily for functional purposes, but over time the process evolved into an art form whereby cabinet makers deliberately crafted and embellished pieces of furniture. These became a status symbol for the wealthy. Antique furniture is described as various furnishings that are characterised according to the period/time they were made. Their value and popularity as collector's items are generally measured by age, quality, condition and rarity.
